John Russell was Australia’s great Post-Impressionist — a friend of Monet, a student of Rodin, and a painter whose work deserves far more recognition than it receives. This large-scale interpretation by Brett Muhlhan pays homage to Russell’s 1887 garden painting at Longpré-les-Corps-Saints, reimagined through Brett’s own hand and sensibility.

Working at an ambitious 124 × 190.5 cm, Brett engages with the lush, dappled light of Russell’s original — the overgrown abundance of a French garden in summer — while bringing something distinctly his own to the surface. It is a conversation across time between two Australian painters who found their subject in the garden.

A significant work, and a rare opportunity to acquire a large-format original at this scale.
